In Uganda, Smile Africa is a school that supports the surrounding community. They feed many children, care for local orphans, and enable the community with skills and education.
This new campus ties the diverse program of Smile Africa into a unified whole, with each piece of program paired with a secondary agricultural function. The existing ecosystem is strengthened as it expands.
Local construction materials of bamboo and compressed earth block are employed in a novel, modular construction system. Light and air are modulated and infused with plant life to establish a vibrant ecosystem. Scales of open spaces are established: large play areas, outdoor classrooms, and space for solitude and reflection.
